1000 Islands - Kingston Attractions

1000 Islands Kingston Attractions - Eastern OntarioThe magnificent 1000 islands are a "must" on any visit to Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto. There are cruises offered by 1000 Islands Cruises which offers a cruise for everyone: a 1.5 hour tour of Kingston’s historic harbour, a 3-hour cruise aboard an old fashioned paddle wheeler with live entertainment and scenery that is second to none. There are also 1000 islands dinner cruises for your enjoyment while visiting Kingston and Ontario. What more could ask for than fine dining through the Thousand Islands.

1000 Islands Kingston Location:

The Thousand Islands Region is an international tourism destination, encompassing communities on both sides of the US and Canada border along the St. Lawrence River and the eastern shores of Lake Ontario. The region takes its name from the more than 1000 islands that dot the lake and river along this international waterway. The region extends from Kingson to Cornwall on the Canadian side, and from Oswego to Massena on the US side, reaching inland to the foothills of the Adirondack mountains to embrace the communities that are west and north of the Adirondack Park, and the four NY Counties of Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence.

The St. Lawrence River, flowing in from Lake Ontario becomes in the course of a few miles, so wide and so full of islands that it was called the Lake of the Thousdand Islands. To the Indians it was known as “Manatoana” or Garden of the Great Spirit. As a vacation paradise it is world renowned. The river, 15 miles at its source, gradually narrows to five miles in width, and the islands over 1800 of them, vary in size from mere points of rock to those of several square miles in area. They extend from Cape Vincent to Ogdensburg, a distance of 50 miles. The 1000 Islands Seaway Region boasts some of the very best sportfishing opportunities in the nation all year-round whether you're a novice or an avid angler. It's not unusual to see a professional bass or salmon tournament underway on the St. Lawrence, Lake Ontario, or Oneida Lake.

The eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario is known worldwide as a mecca for salmon, brown and lake trout fisherman, and the bass and pike fishing in the St. Lawrence, Black, Salmon, and Oswego rivers is great. The muskie fishing in the St. Lawrence River and the walleye fishing in Oneida Lake are legendary. The Eastern Lake Ontario tributaries also form one of the finest winter steelhead fisheries in the Northeast.
